Freelance Rockstars: Don’t Let it Get To Your Head!

You’ve come a long way and now its your time to shine. Your name almost becomes a buzzword around the blogosphere. Your prices go up, but is your work that much better now then it was before you found stardom? Or are your clients really only paying for your name? This is a call to all you “Freelance Rockstars” out there… don’t let it get to your head!
There’s a general rule known to most informed people out there looking for a designer or developer (and so on)… and its “Don’t hire the Rockstar designer or developer… hire the quiet talent instead.” Why? Because they will not only get the same or greater quality of work, but they will also get it at a reasonable price. These types of freelancers are also much easier to deal with for clients then those on top of the world.
Rockstar freelancers are at risk of becoming the stereotypical ego workers (It’s my way or the highway type) which can leave a bad taste in the clients mouth. This can also hurt your fellow freelancers as well. While many of us work hard, keep our deadlines, and exceed the expectations of our clients… too many individuals and businesses are already wary of hiring freelancers in favor of design firms or development houses instead. Some of us are looked upon not as freelancers but freeloaders! Any bad experience of a client is a bad outcome for all other freelancers.
If you an up-coming freelancer my advice to you is to stick with whats been working and don’t change it even if you hit the big time! When and if you become the next rockstar name, remember you are always at risk of walking off the path that lead you there… and the only direction to go is down!

Hey Alex, this is great advice! I couldn’t agree more! And I again find myself linking to you hehe
Now my question is: why would someone want to be called a ‘rockstar designer’ or ‘rockstar freelancer’ anyway? I’ll never get it… Unless you got a bottle of JD on your desk and a guitar in your hands while you design a website for a client…
@Jon:
I will never understand it either! Thanks for the link as well, i’ve been reading FF for awhile now. I’ve always preferred it to FSw in terms of quality… you actually have something useful for the readers
